CAN YOU HANDLE HELP?- BOOK REVIEW

When I first saw the topic of this book, my immediate assumption was that it was geared towards individuals in the business world who prefer to be self-reliant in their careers without seeking much assistance. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was actually a book centred around managing household staff and fostering positive relationships with them.

Many women have had to give up their careers to focus on managing their households, but often end up feeling resentful and unfulfilled when they realise they have not accomplished much in life. Seyi, a lawyer and serial entrepreneur who runs three successful businesses, has developed a framework that can assist women in managing their domestic staff more effectively, allowing them to carve out time to pursue their personal aspirations.

This book caught my attention because it delves into a topic that is not commonly explored by authors. It was my first time encountering a book that focuses on managing domestic help, and I commend the author for shedding light on this important issue.

“Can you handle help” serves as a valuable guide for individuals who struggle with the process of hiring and maintaining domestic staff. Seyi provides insights on how to identify the right candidates and establish effective structures. The book reads like a handbook, offering practical tips on interviewing potential hires, understanding their preferences, identifying red flags, and communicating effectively with them. By providing these insights, the book can assist individuals in achieving better work/life balance.

MY BEST CHAPTER IN CAN YOU HANDLE HELP?

Chapter six, which focuses on treating domestic staff with respect, was particularly insightful and engaging to me. In contrast to the cultural narrative we may have grown up with, which often depicts domestic staff as inferior and subject to unpleasant treatment, Seyi emphasises the importance of treating these individuals with kindness and dignity, recognising them as fellow human beings.

A particularly powerful statement in the chapter reads, “The same way there is no excuse for a man to lay his finger on his wife to beat her, is the same way there should be no excuse for an employer to hit a domestic help.” Seyi then goes on to outline two laws against domestic abuse that are in effect in Nigeria.

She did, however, emphasise the importance of maintaining a professional relationship with them, rather than treating them as friends or confidants. While it is critical to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for domestic workers, it is also critical to set clear boundaries. Maintaining a healthy and effective working relationship requires striking a balance between professionalism and comfort.
